‘Come and take it:’ Spring Branch ISD trustees vote against making recapture payment to state

Posted on August 30, 2023 · The West Houston school district, which has paid more than $200 million during the last three years as part of a statewide wealth redistribution program for Texas public schools, is taking a stand against it. But the state will ultimately be able to receive the required payment for the 2023-24 school year, according to a local education expert.

Mike Miles seeks expanded authority, state waiver for Houston ISD to hire uncertified educators

Posted on August 3, 2023 · Mike Miles, appointed by the Texas Education Agency in June, wants the agency to grant a waiver allowing the district to hire uncertified teachers. The Houston ISD board of managers, also appointed by the agency, will consider that request as well as a push to give Miles expanded power Thursday night.
