County commissioner offers to amend Third Ward bike-lane project if Houston officials contribute millions more

Posted on January 10, 2023 · Work began nearly a year ago on a $12.1 million road reconstruction project near Texas Southern University, where bicycle lanes are being added and vehicular lanes are being reduced. The Houston City Council member who represents the area has said some nearby residents do not want the project and were not adequately consulted beforehand, but Mayor Sylvester Turner says it should move forward.

Texas Southern University locked in legal dispute with police chief who’s still working despite being placed on leave

Posted on December 12, 2022 · Mary Young has been granted two temporary restraining orders against the historically Black university in Houston's Third Ward, which has alleged in court documents that its police chief fraudulently authorized thousands of dollars in extra pay for officers.

Texas Southern University receives grant to become HBCU hub for criminal justice research

Posted on December 12, 2022 · The hub will conduct a crime needs assessment of the City of Houston, create an action plan based on the assessment to provide solutions for the hub's focus – mass incarceration and violent crime – and then share the results with other HBCUs across the country.
