Houston-area Black student suspended over hairstyle to be sent to alternative education program

Posted on October 12, 2023 · Darryl George, 18, is a junior at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu and has been suspended since Aug. 31. He will be sent to EPIC, an alternative school program, from Oct. 12 through Nov. 29 for "failure to comply" with multiple campus and classroom regulations, the principal said in a Wednesday letter provided to The Associated Press by the family.

Family of Houston-area Black student suspended for his hairstyle is suing Texas officials

Posted on September 25, 2023 · Darryl George, a 17-year-old student at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, has been serving an in-school suspension since Aug. 31 because school district officials say his dreadlocks violate their dress code. George's family accuses Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton of failing to enforce the CROWN Act, a new state law outlawing racial discrimination based on hairstyles.
