WATCH: This Is Houston | Lunar New Year

The Lunar New Year celebration begins next week as communities across Houston, and across the globe, welcome the Year of the Pig!

2019 is the Year of the Pig according to the Lunar calendar — and in Houston, many communities are getting ready to celebrate.

Ernie Manouse introduces us to the folklore and legends that help bring in the annual celebration. Tradition has it that to make room for the new year, the old year must be scared away. The old year is seen as the monster Nian — and there are a few things he is scared of: the color red, noise, and ferocious animals.

So today, we welcome the new year by dressing in red, blowing off fireworks or beating drums, and celebrating with a dragon or lion dance.

Ernie takes us to the Oriental Arts Education Center (OAEC) to meet Principal Li Xu, and from the Houston Shaolin Kung Fu Academy, Master Hao Cheng (a 32nd Generation Shaolin Warrior) and Instructor/ Performance Team Leader William Nesbitt.
