UH Moment: University of Houston Receives Top Honors for Diversity

We are the campus of the future. We are an exemplar for other universities in terms of what we are doing

The University of Houston is the first institution to win three Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) awards in one year.

“One of the things it does, it validates the great work we have been doing to create a very rich, diverse and inclusive environment,” said Paula Myrick Short, UH senior vice president for academic affairs and provost.

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine honored the University as a whole, the UH Law Center and the UH School of Nursing for their outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.

“Higher education is really a laboratory where students come in from all different walks of life, all different backgrounds, and they learn together,” said Leonard Baynes, UH Law Center Dean.

“We have to mirror the patients that we serve,” added Katherine Tart, UH Nursing School Dean. “Nursing is a practice profession. When a nurse looks like the patient they are caring for, it is wonderful.”

The awards further affirm the University’s commitment to the pursuit of inclusive excellence.

“We are the campus of the future. We are an exemplar for other universities in terms of what we are doing,” Baynes said.
