When you think of Houston's AAPI community, you might think fondly of the vibrant businesses, restaurants and community centers in the city's Asia Town.
But Asia Americans have been making a mark all over Greater Houston since the late 19th century.
Today, in honor of Asia American and Pacific Islander – or AAPI – Heritage Month, we celebrate the history of Asians and Asian Americans right here in Houston.
Experts discuss the diversity, contributions, and challenges of the AAPI community, as well as the hopes and dreams of the next generation.
In addition, we talk about Asia Society Texas’ 31 Ways to Celebrate AAPI Month in May and beyond.
Guests:
- Adjunct Lecturer in the School of Humanities at Rice University
- Manager of the Houston Asian American Archive
Stephanie Todd-Wong
- Director of Communications and Audience Engagement at the Asia Society Texas
Town Square with Ernie Manouse is a gathering space for the community to come together and discuss the day's most important and pressing issues.
Audio from today’s show will be available after 5 p.m. CT. We also offer a free podcast here, on iTunes, and other apps.
