You may remember seeing it.

A dramatic and all-too-real photo of a Houston doctor, covered in full PPE, embracing an elderly COVID patient on Thanksgiving Day.

It was posted on social media and went viral last fall, capturing a moment that epitomized the severe physical and emotional toll of this pandemic.

Today, we have that very doctor with us – Dr. Joseph Varon of United Memorial Medical Center. He updates us on the situation at his hospital and what he is seeing out in the community.

We also check in with Galveston County to hear about their vaccine rollout, as well as compare the different approaches to vaccination between the City of Houston and Harris County.

Plus, Dr. Scott Weaver of UTMB fields listeners' COVID and vaccine questions.

Guests are:

Dr. Joseph Varon:

  • Chief of Staff and Chief of Critical Care Services at United Memorial Medical Center

Elizabeth Trovall:

  • Houston Public Media Immigration Reporter

Dr. Philip Keiser:

  • Local Health Authority for Galveston County

Dr. Scott Weaver:

  • Director UTMB Institute of Human Infections and Immunity
