Skyline Sessions

Skyline Sessions: Steve Earle

Watch the Grammy-winning country-rock artist perform in the studio.

In 2009, Steve Earle made an album called TOWNES, a tribute to one of Earle’s mentors, the legendary Texas troubadour Townes Van Zandt. This year, Earle released GUY, a paean to his other major influence, Guy Clark, the Texas folk-country songwriter who passed away from cancer in 2016. Though Clark never achieved the kind of mainstream success and notoriety as some of his contemporaries, his songs were recorded by some of country music’s most respected artists, like Jerry Jeff Walker, Rodney Crowell, Ricky Skaggs, and Lyle Lovett. In March of this year, the Grammy-winning Earle visited Houston Public Media to talk with Houston Matters about GUY and record the Guy Clark songs “Dublin Blues” and “L.A. Freeway.”

In 2017, Steve Earle’s son, Justin Townes Earle, visited Skyline Sessions to record a couple of his own original songs. Watch here.
