Live In Studio: Charley Crockett

Texas-based singer-songwriter creates a musical gumbo of Gulf Coast styles.

Originally from the small town of San Benito, Texas, near the southern tip of the Lone Star State, Charley Crockett (a direct descendent of Davy Crockett) is a self-taught musician who honed his craft busking on the streets of New Orleans, New York City, and in Europe. Combining the vintage sounds of Texas swing, Louisiana blues and New Orleans jazz with a touch of contemporary R&B, Crockett achieves a style both familiar and unpredictable. While in Houston for a concert at the Heights Theater, Crockett (with Charles Mills Jr. on trumpet and Kullen Fox on accordion) visited Houston Public Media’s Geary Studio to record the original song “I Am Not Afraid” and the Texas standard “Driving Nails In My Coffin.”
