Now in their fourth year of collaboration, HGOco, University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, Writers in the Schools, and Kashmere Gardens Elementary have teamed up for another musical exploration. Here’s how it works: Writers in the Schools sends local poets to Kashmere Gardens, where the poets engage students in a writing exercise. The finished poems are sent to HGOco and the composition program at the Moores School, where the poems are set to music and rehearsed for performance. Moores School composers Kyle Rivera, Madeline Styskal, and Joshua Zinn, as well as HGOco mezzo-soprano Teresa Procter and pianist Mark Buller, visited Houston Public Media’s Geary Studio to record some of the finished selections.

Also, listen to this Music in the Making episode for a more in-depth look into the process behind the music.
