Houston’s Apollo Chamber Players commissioned Turkish-born composer Erberk Eryilmaz to write a piece of music inspired by Roma (Gypsy) traditions for a recital exploring Roma folk music. Eryilmaz’s piece, “Thracian Airs of Besime Sultan,” is based around folk music from the Balkan region of eastern Europe. Apollo’s recital, “Roma Folk Lyricism,” took place May 1st at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.

The musicians and composer also sat down for an interview with Houston Public Media’s St.John Flynn.
