Earlier this summer, the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center performed its first-ever simultaneous heart and kidney transplant. It was also the third heart transplant performed at Houston’s VA Med Center, the full-service hospital that provides medical care for U.S. veterans.

Dr. Mark Kobelja is the chief of staff with the Houston VA. In the audio above, we talk with him about the hospital dipping its toes into certain transplantation procedures, the need for organ donations, and other priorities at the medical center.
