Alongside works by Tchaikovsky and Clara Schumann, this weekend (Friday, May 26th) the Houston-based string orchestra Kinetic will premiere a new piece by local composer Theo Chandler.

The work, Beyond the Sanctuary Walls, features soprano Alexandra Smither and double bassist Charles Paul as soloists. Both musicians alternately take the spotlight throughout the piece’s five moments, with love songs and music inspired by fear. For Chandler, the aim of the music is to overcome that fear and embrace the feelings of love and being loved.

In the audio above, Houston Matters producer Joshua Zinn talks with Chandler, Smither, and Paul about putting together this new piece of music.
