Tonight (Thursday, April 13, 2023) at 7:30 at Jones Hall, the Houston Symphony will be stepping into a new pair of musical shoes as they join forces with the University of North Texas’ One O’Clock Lab Band, the school’s top jazz ensemble that has been nominated for 7 Grammy Awards, one in every decade since the 1970s.

The concert will feature guest soloists and include music by John Williams and some UNT graduates, as well as the premiere of a new work by the band’s director, Alan Baylock. In the audio above, he tells our own Joshua Zinn about the collaboration and his approach to teaching jazz to college musicians.
