On Friday Houston Matters: The two biggest oil producers in the Houston region have merged into one super oil entity. Occidental Petroleum completed a $38 billion acquisition of Anadarko Petroleum Thursday, but the work begins now to integrate the two companies. We learn what’s next.

And we discuss the effect witnessing frequent acts of violence — or seeing them in the news — has on our collective psyche.

Also this hour: In light of the recent mass shooting in El Paso, former skinhead Christian Picciolini explains what drives people to radical, hateful views and what can be done to help them.

Then, from a photo circulating of an arrested black man being led by a rope behind police horses, to Houston being temporarily snubbed in a series of public meetings about flooding, we discuss The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the week's news.

Plus, in the latest from Houston Public Media’s podcast Unwrap Your Candies Now, we learn about the Rent 20th anniversary tour, which is at the Hobby Center through Sunday.
