A new study from Rice University and Rutgers examines what journalism professors are telling students about their job prospects.

In the wake of continuing changes to the media landscape, some journalism educators are encouraging their students to consider fields outside the industry, according to a new study from Rice University and Rutgers University.

It’s well understood that the field of journalism has undergone some significant changes in the age of the Internet. With print journalism experiencing a decline and continuing changes in how media is consumed, students have to be prepared for what the researchers call “deprofessionalization” — that’s when non-qualified or less-qualified individuals are used to perform work that traditionally had been viewed as skilled. In the case of journalism, an example might be the rise of sometimes untrained bloggers as sources of news.
