Houston Matters

Full Show: Kinder Morgan Wins Texas Eminent Domain Challenge, And Wrongful Conviction Compensation Denied (June 26, 2019)

On Wednesday’s Houston Matters: Eminent domain in Texas, why a wrongfully-convicted death row prisoner was denied compensation, the latest developments in national, state and local politics, and the logistical challenges facing the concept of reparation. Plus, Ernie Manouse talks to Seth Andrew Bridges, who stars in the Alley Theatre’s production of The Three Musketeers.

On Wednesday’s Houston Matters: A Travis County District Court ruled Tuesday that Kinder Morgan Inc. does not need to seek approval from the Texas Railroad Commission to build its proposed $2 billion natural gas pipeline. Landowners had challenged Kinder Morgan’s eminent domain authority. To learn more about eminent domain in Texas, we talk with adjunct professor Justin Hodge from the University of Houston Law Center.

And, David Kwok, assistant professor at UH Law Center, discusses why the state comptroller has denied a wrongfully-convicted death row prisoner compensation for his 12 years in jail.

Also this hour: Former special counsel, Robert Mueller, has agreed to testify in public before Congress next month. We discuss that and other latest developments in national, state and local politics on our weekly political roundup.

Then, we revisit a previous discussion on the concept of reparations, and what other ways exist for all Americans — and Texans especially — to come to terms with our racist past.

Plus: Houston Public Media’s Ernie Manouse talks to Seth Andrew Bridges, one of the Musketeers in the Alley Theatre’s production of Ken Ludwig’s The Three Musketeers.
