Houston has seen some high-profile restaurant closures so far this year.

Some of them include The Pass & Provisions, a critically acclaimed two-in-one spot that originally opened seven years ago.

Then there’s Presidio, a popular Heights spot that was damaged in a fire last year.

And Indika will close at the end of the month. The 18-year Montrose-area Indian establishment was originally founded by Pondicheri chef and owner Anita Jaisinghani.

So, as a city known for its diverse culinary scene, how kind is Houston to its restaurants? Do we open and close the same number as anywhere else? Are there specific challenges that Houston brings to would-be restaurateurs?

In the audio above, Dr. Scott Taylor, Jr. from the University of Houston discusses what successful Houston restaurants do best — and some of the common reasons they close.
