The University of Houston men’s basketball team is now ranked No. 9 in the nation in the Associated Press college basketball poll.

This is the first time the Cougars have been ranked in the Top Ten since the “Phi Slama Jama” teams of the 1980s that made it to the national championship game at the end of the 1984 season.

The Cougars are 23-1 after a win Sunday over Cincinnati. They’re in first place in the American Athletic Conference and have won 32 consecutive games at home, dating back to last season.

In the audio above, sportswriter Jeff Balke updates Houston Matters on the Cougars’ season and the latest local sports stories, including the Rockets acquiring Iman Shumpert in a three-way deal, pitchers and catchers for the Astros reporting to Spring Training Thursday, and potential rule changes being proposed for Major League Baseball.

Balke writes for Houston Press and Houstonia Magazine.
