Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species was published in 1859. His theory of evolution by natural selection was groundbreaking for its time and laid the foundation for modern science.

Scott Solomon, associate professor in biosciences at Rice University, takes a deeper look at how the theory of evolution has changed since Darwin. Solomon has just created a digital course called What Darwin Didn't Know: The Modern Science of Evolution.

In the audio above, Solomon tells Houston Matters producer Maggie Martin how modern science has built on Darwin's original theory of evolution.
