Rob Melrose is busy planning the 2019-2020 season at the Alley Theatre as he takes the creative helm of Houston's largest theater company.

Melrose, an award-winning director and writer, was selected for the post in November and just relocated to Houston. He's the former artistic director and co-founder of Cutting Ball Theater, an experimental, avant-garde theater in San Francisco and has worked nationally as a freelance director.

He succeeds former artistic director Gregory Boyd, who departed last year after numerous current and former Alley employees accused the Tony-winning director of abusive behavior. Boyd abruptly retired with two days' notice last January and was given a $383,000 severance package.

In the audio above, Melrose discusses why he wanted to come to Houston, his creative vision for the Alley, and how he plans to create a safe working environment for staff and collaborators.
