How Did Houston Land The Manchester Derby On Its First-Ever Trip Outside the UK?

On Thursday, Houston’s NRG Stadium will host Manchester Derby, a soccer match between Manchester City and Manchester United football clubs of England.

Great sports rivalries – think the Yankees and the Red Sox – can be intense. Now imagine how much more intense it might be if both those two teams were located in the same city.

That just begins to capture the intensity of the rivalry between the Manchester City and Manchester United football clubs in England. The two teams face off each year in the Manchester Derby, which has never been played outside the U.K. – until this week.

On Thursday (July 20, 2017), Houston's NRG Stadium will host the match. Carli Lloyd, star of the Houston Dash and US Women's Olympic team, spent three months in Manchester earlier this year playing with the Manchester City women's team and got a first-hand glimpse of the rivalry. She told Houston Matters' Michael Hagerty about the magnitude of the match.
