Donna Valverde is a Texas attorney who’s produced a film about a brutal procedure that some parts of the world still practice today. Female genital mutilation includes procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs. The World Health Organization says more than 125 million girls and women alive today have been cut in the nearly 30 countries in Africa and the Middle East where female genital mutilation is concentrated. After learning a few years ago that the practice is still prevalent today, Donna Valverde created Valvisions, a non-profit created to raise awareness of the practice.

Houston’s Matters sat down with Donna Valverde to talk about her non-profit and her film.

Her film “Healing Magdalene” will be screened at River Oaks Theatre on September 18th at 7 o’clock.
