Sugar Land is one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas. And yet, some see it as merely a suburb of Houston. On this edition of Houston Matters, we learn about Sugar Land from Mayor James Thompson and Jessica Brown, Tourism & Marketing Manager with Visit Sugar Land Convention and Visitor Service. Then we talk with John Rigg, editor of the Sugar Land/Missouri City Community Impact Newspaper.

Also this hour: Two weeks ago, we discussed the latest homeless count numbers with the Coalition for
the Homeless. As we learned, it’s difficult to determine precisely how many people in Greater Houston are homeless. It may be even harder to identify homeless children. We discuss the issues surrounding Houston’s homeless youth population.

And: Houston Matters’ summer reading series continues. We hear from Texas Southern University history professor Karen Kossie-Chernyshev, author of Recovering Five Generations Hence:The Life and Writing of Lillian Jones Horace.
