Greater Houston can lay claim to a lot – we have a thriving oil and gas industry, we’re a major player in health care, our population’s on the rise, we’re diverse, we’re young, we’re…stuck in traffic.

We can also tout our varied and growing restaurant industry. There are few things we’re missing in Greater Houston, food-wise. And we have options for just about any budget, from great deals at corner taquerias to formal fine dining in areas like the Galleria neighborhood and City Centre. But just how challenging is it to maintain a restaurant in Houston? Do prices here stack up favorably with other cities? What do restaurateurs face, year to year, in keeping their restaurants going strong in Houston? Is there too much competition? For which types of restaurants?

On this edition of Houston Matters, we’ll discuss the restaurant scene in Houston, the challenges restaurateurs face amid fierce competition, and we’ll welcome your suggestions for restaurants Houston doesn’t have, but probably should.

Also on today’s show: Researchers at Texas A&M say a new insect is attacking certain crops here in Texas. They “sugarcane aphid” is considered an invasive species, but it’s not the only one. We’ll learn about red fire ants, Raspberry “crazy ants,” and other invasive species, as we welcome your questions for an entomologist from Texas A&M, and an ant expert from Rice.

Plus: In the last year, the folks at ComedySportz Houston, late on Saturday nights, have been recreating some classic stories in oddball ways. They turn to the audience for suggested replacements in character occupations, props, and settings, and then improvise a staged adaptation of the tale in question. Think Star Wars, but with mops instead of light sabers, Luke Skywalker’s a pop star, and Darth Vader’s suffering from a massive head cold.

The latest in ComedySportz’ “Unscripted” series premiered this month. Alice in Wonderland: Unscripted continues Saturdays through April, and of course, since the audience supplies much of the information on which the storytelling is based, each week’s show is unique. We’ll visit ComedySportz Houston to learn more.
