You may have heard that this is “School Choice Week” – it’s an awareness campaign to promote alternative education options. Some see that as code for school vouchers. For others, it represents a desire to highlight the fact there are lots of educational options out there. It’s with the latter in mind that we’ll highlight three non-traditional education alternatives Houstonians engage in on today’s Houston Matters.

This hour, we’ll discuss online learning with the head of the Texas Virtual Academy. We’ll learn about the Montessori Method of teaching from the High School Director at Post Oak School, and we’ll talk with a Houston mom who has decided to home school her children. And we’ll welcome your questions and comments for all three.

Also ahead: we find out how AMBER Alerts are managed in Houston by the non-profit Texas Center for the Missing.

And: perhaps you’ve at one time or another visited the Rothko Chapel in Houston’s museum district. It’s intended as a sacred space for contemplation, and a showcase for art. We’ll learn about events planned by the Chapel to celebrate the artist who designed it.
