Leaders in the global shipping industry are coming to Houston next week for the annual Shipping and Offshore Conference. Attendees will discuss new international shipping routes and the expansion of offshore projects around the world. Organizers say Houston – home to one of the largest ports in the United States – is a natural fit to host this conference.
On Friday’s Houston Matters, we discuss what the shipping industry means to Greater Houstonâs economy, and what challenges the industry faces as our community continues to grow.
Also, a lot can happen in a week in Houston. Some of it good, some of it bad, some of it downright ugly. From food vendors on patrol, to bars as a barometer for Houston’s draw to twentysomethings, to the “most famous” book about Texas, we’ll turn to our panel of non-experts to discuss The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly in Houston news this week.
And, we learn about this weekend’s Houston SLAB Parade and Family Festival, which seeks to celebrate cars that are “Slow, Low, and Bangin.”  SLABs are typically older-model American sedans enhanced by modifications to both the exterior and interior of the car, and it’s a tradition rooted in hip hop culture here in Houston, dating back to the 1980s.
