This weekend, classical violinist Joshua Bell will join the Houston Symphony at Jones Hall for a performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. It is likely to be a slightly more dignified affair than his last gig, as one of the judges last weekend of the Miss America pageant.
Bell and his fellow judges crowned Nina Davuluri, Miss New York, as Miss America. She is the first Indian American to win the crown. And that fact placed Bell in the middle of some unexpected nonsense, as – and let's face it, this was predictable – some ignorant yahoos in the Twitterverse tweeted out some racist bilge, and then a bunch of web sites and 24 hour cable news nets latched on to stir the pot. Among the perplexing remarks, were those suggesting confusion that somehow, the new Miss America wasn't American.
