Grief is a natural reaction to loss. Dr. Kenya Steele, Family physician and Assistant Dean of Outreach and Student Pathways at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine says it can be experienced by adults and children.

Some of the examples of loss include:

  • Death of a loved one or ending of an important relationship
  • Job loss or theft
  • Lack of independence

You may experience all kinds of difficult and unexpected emotions. There are several ways to cope with loss:

  • Acknowledge your pain and accept that grief can trigger different emotions.
  • Understand that the grieving process is unique to each person.
  • Seek out face-to-face support.
  • Support yourself emotionally by taking care of yourself physically.

Be sure to check in and support friends and children who may be experiencing grief.
