What are some ways to improve your heart health? Dr. Kenya Steele, a family Physician and assistant Dean of Diversity and Outreach at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine has some advice and tips.

Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in the U.S. The heart circulates oxygen and nutrient-rich blood throughout the body. When it’s not working properly, just about everything is affected.

A Healthy heart can help keep blood pressure normal, improve levels of cholesterol in the blood and improve your body’s ability to manage blood sugar, which lowers your risk for type 2 diabetes.

Here are a few tips to maintain heart health:

  • Eat a healthy diet.
  • Exercise for 30 minutes a day.
  • Get enough sleep.
  • Stop smoking and avoid secondhand smoke.
  • Manage your stress.
