Caring for our loved ones can be rewarding but may also wear us out. Professor Bill Elder, Chair of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the Tillman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine explains how we can support caregivers.

“America has an aging population and about one in three adults act as primary caregivers. Many hesitate to ask for help or can be so focused on loved ones, that they don't recognize their own emotional and physical stress.”

Here are some tips for supporting caregivers:

  • Arrange for respite care or volunteer to handle caregiving for a certain period.
  • Offer emotional support. Caregivers often feel overwhelmed and isolated. Just listening can help.
  • Ask them what you can do for them.

“Caregiving is hard work and caregivers need help to stay healthy.”
