Swimming Safety For Summer

Take the time to make sure you enjoy the water safely this summer. Camille Leugers, a family physician in the department of clinical sciences at the University of Houston College of Medicine reminds us of some important tips.

“With summer here, many will be spending time at the beach or by the pool. Unfortunately drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental deaths in children. Here are some ways to safely enjoy the water.”

  • Make sure you and your family learn how to swim and perform CPR. A quick response can save a life.
  • Don't leave children unsupervised in water, whether it's the pool or the bathtub. Avoid distractions. A child can drown in minutes.
  • During the pandemic, outdoor pools will be safer than indoor pools. If using a public pool, ask about their pandemic safety protocols.
  • Use sunscreen when in the sun.
  • Wear an approved lifejacket when near water.
  • Put protective barriers around the pool to limit access.
