Poison Safety For Your Home

Guest: Dr. Joel Blumberg

March is Poison Awareness month. Dr. Joel Blumberg, Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Houston College of Medicine has some tips to keep everyone safe.

“Each year, about 3 million people come in contact with poisonous substances, sometimes with fatal results. Common household items like cleaning agents, medications, and pesticides can be dangerous.”

Here are some tips:

  • Store potentially dangerous products in locked cabinets.
  • Avoid detergent pods and button batteries if young children are in your home.
  • Use safety caps on medications and discard unused meds safely.
  • Keep vaping nicotine out of reach. Even a small amount can be fatal to a child.
  • Finally, maintain working carbon monoxide detectors.

“Prevention is the key to poison safety, but in case of an emergency, call 9-1-1 or the Poison Control.”
