Dealing With Eating Disorders

Guest: Dr. Kristin Kassaw

Eating disorders are serious conditions. Dr. Kristin Kassaw, psychiatrist at the College of Medicine at the University of Houston College of Medicine explains how proper treatment can help.

“Eating disorders are not a lifestyle choice – they are complex illnesses that can harm the heart, digestive system and bones and sometimes be fatal. The most common disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge-eating. Early diagnosis of an eating disorder is important. Treatment is complex and involves a specialized team of medical professionals.”

Warning signs include:

  • Skipping meals or binge eating.
  • Preoccupation with food and body image.
  • Restrictive diets.
  • Excessive exercise.

“With treatment, individuals can live a healthy life. If you are worried about a loved one, have a calm and supportive discussion and urge them to talk to a doctor.”
