Staying Engaged For A Healthy Brain

Guest: Professor Thomas Thesen

It’s important to make sure you are taking care of your brain during the pandemic. Professor Thomas Thesen, a cognitive neuroscientist in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Houston College of Medicine has some smart advice.

“The pandemic has upended regular life, forcing us to stay home and engage much less with the world. This can lead to mental fatigue and habits that are unhealthy for our minds.”

Here are some tips for brain health:

  1. Stay mentally active by taking an online class, starting a new hobby or reading a book
  2. Stay connected with your friends and loved ones with regular phone or video calls.
  3. Keep a schedule for each day and stick to it. This gives you structure and purpose.
  4. The food we eat affects our brains, attention and mood. Eat a healthy and balanced diet.
  5. Make sure you stay physically active with cardio and light strength training

“Each day offers us opportunities for a healthy mind!”
