FDA’s Updated Nutrition Labels

Next time you pull out a bag of chips to eat, you may notice that the nutrition label has changed. Dean Leonard Baynes, with the University of Houston Law Center, looks at what's different.

"The typeset for the word ‘calories' is larger and serving size portions are updated," Dean Baynes said. "Other changes include revised daily values, a new line for ‘added sugars", and the deletion of the ‘calories from fat' line."

"The updated labels will be more reflective of the serving sizes that are routinely eaten," Baynes said. "For example, the serving size for ice cream will be 2/3 cup as opposed to ½ cup. That can of soup you typically consume in one sitting, despite the label's claim of one-and-a-half servings, will now come in at just one serving."

"This move marks the first time in over 20 years that the FDA has updated rules for these labels," he continued. "The FDA decision was based on scientific evidence linking portion sizes to obesity and heart disease. These changes will give consumers the information necessary to make better food choices."
