Briefcase: USMCA and Autoworkers

The U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement (USMCA) is markedly different from its predecessor, NAFTA. Alfonso Lopez de la Osa, with the University of Houston Law Center, is Director of the U.S. Mexican Law Center.  He explained some of the differences of the two agreements.

“Overall, the regulations regarding manufacturing of auto parts has increased significantly under the new guidelines,” Professor Lopez de la Osa said. And USMCA specifically would affect Mexican autoworkers.  “The agreement provides that, within the next five years, around 45% of the manufacturing of auto parts has to be done by workers paid $16 per hour, which benefits the Mexican autoworkers,” Lopez de la Osa said. “That’s about five times what they currently make. It also acknowledges the existence of Mexico’s labor unions and rights such as collective bargaining.”
