"Shopping around" is a common strategy when making a new purchase, and asking for discounts can feel empowering instead of uncomfortable.

Professor Johannes Habel with the Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston, explains.

"Asking salespeople for a discount can feel awkward. However, it often pays off. Whether you're buying a car, furniture or new clothes, very often salespeople will be willing to give you a discount to satisfy your needs, seal the deal, and get your loyalty.”

“A change in your mindset can help you feel confident when asking for discounts: Don't overthink and take it too seriously but make a game out of it. So leave your comfort zone and enjoy the thrill of negotiating every once in awhile."
