The language of our communication is digital.  And when learning a new language, you start at the beginning, in this case learning the technology itself.

“Everything is digital,” said Phil Snyder is an instructional professor in the University of Houston College of Technology. “Our emphasis is technology. Whether you’re an artist of not, if you don’t know the technology people are going to pass you by for somebody who does know the technology, especially someone who knows the technology and knows how to tell a story. “

Students in his new digital media classes will create content in 2-D and 3-D, animation, digital video production — stories on all digital platforms.

Snyder, a veteran of the industry, brings a new term to his classes, transmedia.

“Transmedia is using multimedia platforms and authoring everything from video to animation to games, interactive games and live events,” he said.  “All these different technologies come together to deliver this content using digital media.”

His industry experience began at Lockheed Martin’s motion picture and television department, then to documentary production and voice overs. Snyder is the official voice of Disney’s Jiminy Cricket.

Snyder says UH is leading the trend in digital media production molding students into program managers who will produce and deliver content over various avenues of distribution.

“It’s a phenomenal thing that’s going on and the implications and societal evolution that’s taking place right now it’s just a sight to behold I think.”

Digital Media is part of what’s happening at the University of Houston.
