Kofi and Vicki Fiakpui

Kofi and Vicki Fiakpui are siblings and they, along with other brothers, sisters and family members, lived in New Orleans all their lives. Hurricane Katrina changed that. The storm forced the family to relocate to Houston, but they both have plans to move back to the city they call “home”.

The Fiakpui siblings were completely inconvenienced by Hurricane Katrina. Their whole world was centered in their New Orleans’ neighborhood. They knew everyone there and seldom ventured outside what they called their “hood”. They loved being able to go to the corner store and buy a “hot plate”. They waved at and talked to everyone up and down their street…..they even knew the names of the stray dogs. Their block was their world. Then came Katrina and their lives were turned upside down. Vicki, her mother and her son had to evacuate to Houston after being rescued from the roof of their home. Once in Houston, they reconnected with brother Kofi. They’ve since tried to make Houston their home, but the Fiakpui family felt that New Orleans was where they belonged. They’ve revisited the old neighborhood several times, but haven’t moved back yet. They both plan to and they hope to recreate their simple world that the big storm took away.
