Nearly one month into the fall season, it's finally starting to feel like it in Houston.

A cold front that moved into the region Monday brought rain across much of the Houston area, and it's bringing cooler temperatures as well. Lows in the 40-degree range and potentially in the 30s are forecasted for Tuesday night and Wednesday night, with daytime temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday expected to stay below 70.

"We're going to see a pretty steady drop-off in temperatures beginning tonight," Tim Cady, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Houston-Galveston office, said Monday. "We'll get that first real taste of real fall weather this week. ... So it might be finally time to turn those heaters on and maybe layer up if you're heading outdoors."

The projected low for Monday is 57 degrees, with a high in the mid-70s, a north wind between 10-15 mph and slight chances for rain through the late afternoon. There is dry air behind the front, Cady said, so precipitation is expected to dissipate by Tuesday.

No rain is in the Houston area's forecast for the remainder of the week.

"The rain chances do begin to return to the forecast toward the end of next weekend when we start to get more moisture into the area again," Cady said. "But aside from these lighter showers that are moving through the area today, it's looking fairly dry."

North winds between 5-15 mph are forecasted through Wednesday, contributing to the cooler temperatures. It is expected to be mostly sunny and clear from Tuesday throughout the weekend, with temperatures starting to warm up on Thursday.

Thursday's forecast calls for a high of 79 and a low of 58. Temperatures are expected to rise to the mid-80s on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, when there will be overnight lows in the 60s.

"After that long, hot, humid summer, it's going to feel quite nice," Cady said.
