Well, he’s an author, a longtime proponent of removing freeways from urban centers, and he’ll speak about just that tonight (Sept. 22, 2015) at Rice’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research.

Norquist is known for successfully working for the removal of an elevated freeway in Milwaukee. His experience is timely with current discussions about the future of Houston’s Pierce Elevated. Norquist, who served as Milwaukee’s mayor from 1988-2003, advocates on behalf of using surface streets and public transportation to alleviate congestion.

He talks with us about his views on the issue and his book The Wealth of Cities: Revitalizing the Centers of City Life.
