State Representative Carol Alvarado of Houston is sponsoring a measure during this legislative session that would create a Texas Gaming Commission. The commission could establish casino gambling in resort areas and in major cities, including Houston. Meanwhile, law enforcement officials in Harris County and the city of Houston have begun to tackle illegal gambling using game room regulations that went into effect last Spring. Harris County Commissioners approved the rules in December 2013. Houston’s City Council approved an agreement with the county a few months later to also enforce the game room regulations.

On this edition of Houston Matters, we discuss what’s allowed and what’s illegal under these rules, the impact they’re having on game room operations so far, and the challenges of enforcing the new rules.

Also this hour: Saturday, Jan. 31, is the final day for the public to give input on a proposal to turn Houston’s Ellington Airport into a spaceport. The FAA is gathering public comment on the plan, and airport officials hope to gain approval for the plan as early as this summer. We learn more from Houston Public Media transportation reporter Gail Delaughter.

Then: We discuss social entrepreneurship in Houston and projects Houstonians are involved in here at home and abroad.

And: We visit the recently opened Johnny Steele Dog Park.
