The Southwest Freeway, at its intersection with Loop 610 West, will be closed for construction during the next two weekends, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

Significant portions of one of Houston’s most well-traveled freeway intersections will be closed during the next two weekends.

Both the northbound and southland main lanes on Interstate 69 — known locally as the Southwest Freeway — will be closed at their intersection with Loop 610 West in the Galleria area from 8 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). They also will be closed from 8 p.m. Sept. 30 through 5 a.m. Oct. 3.

There will be multiple nearby ramp closures as well as TxDOT continues work on a $259 million interchange project. Construction crews will continue the demolition of the old 610 southbound bridge, which stretches over the Southwest Freeway main lanes, according to TxDOT.

“Motorists should expect delays this weekend and may want to consider an alternate route,” TxDOT said in a statement. “Police officers will be onsite to assist with traffic control.”

According to TxDOT, the ongoing interchange project aims to “enhance safety and improve mobility by widening the connector ramps to two lanes, increasing sight distances and providing remedies to eliminate weaving.”

A total of three connector ramps at the freeway intersection, along with two entrance ramps and two exit ramps along I-69, will be closed this weekend. Below is a list of the specific closures, according to TxDOT.

  • Northbound and southbound main lanes of I-69 at their intersection with Loop 610 West
  • I-69 northbound connector ramp to 610 West northbound
  • I-69 southbound connector ramp to 610 West southbound
  • 610 southbound connector ramp to I-69 northbound
  • I-69 northbound entrance ramp from Chimney Rock Road
  • I-69 northbound exit ramp to Bissonnet Street
  • I-69 southbound entrance ramp from Wesleyan Street
  • I-69 southbound exit ramp to Westheimer Road
  • Lancashire Street northbound and southbound from I-69 frontage road to Merwin Street

The high-occupancy vehicle lanes at the freeway intersection also will be closed this weekend, according to METRO.
