Intro to who you are and what you hope to get out of this internship.

My name is Ellen Trinklein. Hailing from the faraway state of Connecticut, this Nutmegger is still shocked to have scored an internship that combines my passion for public media with my love of Texas. At the end of this internship, I hope to learn the art of broadcasting, improve my journalism skills and learn more about Houston, a city I’ve come to love.

What drew you to KUHF?

KUHF is a great station because it does a phenomenal job of covering diverse local news and truly appreciating and engaging with the Houston community.

What is your favorite public radio show and why?

This American Life, from Chicago’s WBEZ. It combines intense humanity with long and in-depth reporting to create often beautiful stories.

Who is your favorite reporter and why?

A current favorite is Michael Moss for his investigative reporting on the food industry.

What are your favorite publications?

The New York Times, NPR, The Awl, Timothy McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern.

Who should I follow on Twitter and why?

Something I’ve recently loved has been the London-based Turkish restaurant with no license, no rhyme and no reason to be funny (although I’m glad it is): Mangal 2 Restaurant (@Mangal2).

What social media accounts are you involved with?

Admittedly not extremely big in the social media scene, I am a Facebook and occasional Twitter user.

What is the best thing to do in Houston?

Explore the museums, explore downtown, go to free concerts, move a little slower, say hello to strangers, and dine in some of the best restaurants in America.

What do you do when you are not at KUHF?

Hike, pick blueberries, read, watch movies, cook fantastical creations and explore.
