Congressman Al Green secured and will present a $1.55 million check to the Sunnyside Park Community Center to upgrade their facilities.
The funding will cover and replace the gymnasium roof and floor, basketball goals and wall padding. The money will also help with upgrading all four bathrooms.
The center has proposed the "Sunnyside Solar Farm" which upon completion will be the largest urban solar farm in the Southeast United States.
The center currently provides a gymnasium, and meeting rooms that host summer enrichment programs and recreation programs for people of all ages, and free play.
Sunnyside is one of the oldest African American communities and is economically lower than most neighborhoods in the greater Houston area. Green will be at the park to present the check Thursday at 4 p.m..
