The 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination is Wednesday, April 4, 2018.

King was supporting striking sanitation workers when he went to Memphis in 1968 to lead a peaceful march. He was talking with friends on the balcony of Lorraine Motel on April 4 when he was struck by a rifle bullet and killed.

Across the country and here in Houston, civil rights groups, and more will host events to honor the anniversary of the civil rights leader's death.

1- The Lambda Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority presents; How Far Are We from the Mountaintop?

Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Assessing the State of Houston's Black Community 50 Years Later- Policing and Gun Violence.​ Presented by the Lambda Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Free event.

2- Community Music Center presents an MLK Memorial Concert

Community Music Center of Houston presents a musical remembrance performance. The concert will feature spirituals and a large work for orchestra. There will be performances by choir, soloists, and narrator. Free event.

3- UH Commemorates 50th Anniversary of MLK Assassination

A conversation with Reverend Dr. William A. Lawson Founding Pastor Emeritus of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, as he discusses the civil rights movement, his personal relationship and journey with Dr. King. Free event.

Date: April 4, 2018.

4- Black Heritage Society presents 50th Annual MLK Candlelight Memorial

Join the Black Heritage Society on the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. Free event.

5- Death of a King: Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 50 Years Later

An event where the community focuses on some of Dr. King’s last initiatives before his assassination. $10 per person.
