Village MD and Walgreens have opened their first of five primary care clinics that will come to Houston.

Walgreens and Village MD have opened their first primary care clinic in Northwest Houston.

Called Village Medical at Walgreens, the goal of the clinic is to provide primary care services at a convenient neighborhood location — adjacent to a Walgreens.

“Retail health over the last several years has really been about helping patients with acute needs," Tim Barry, the CEO and cofounder of Village MD, said at a ribbon cutting for the opening. "And so you might have an ear infection, and we wanted to create an environment where in your neighborhood you have access to full-service primary care.”

The center offers comprehensive primary care services, including access to pharmacists, nurses and social workers.

“Co-locating primary care at Walgreens will enable us to deliver an integrated experience," said Giovanni Monti, the vice president and director of healthcare innovation at Walgreens Boots Alliance.

Part of this integrated experience means that patients can pick up their prescription medications at the same place where they visit the doctor.

An additional four Village Medical at Walgreens locations are expected to open in Houston by the end of January 2020. Those interested in booking an appointment can sign up through Village Medical or Walgreens Find Care.

CVS has also expanded the range of health services it offers at several Texas locations, including in Spring.
