Researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine say tuberculosis is still prevalent in the U.S. today, including here in Texas. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, there were over 12-hundred cases of TB in the state in 2013. Harris County reported the highest number with nearly 300 cases.

Experts at Baylor say more accurate diagnostic testing the catch the disease early on is needed, especially in children.

Dr. Anna Mandalakas is associate professor of pediatrics at Baylor and director of the Global Tuberculosis Program at Texas Children’s Hospital. She tells Houston Matters’ Maggie Martin why Harris County has the highest number of TB cases in the state.
