On Aug. 27 here in Houston, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACSCAN) will host its first Texas Cancer Policy forum dedicated to educating patients, providers and the public about palliative care.

Palliative care is specialized care for patients with severe illnesses focused on helping them deal with the pain, stress and symptoms of that illness — not just the illness iteself.

We learn about palliative care and why patients, providers, and even insurers are engaged in considering whether and how to expand it, from Dr. Sandra Gomez, a palliative care specialist with Memorial Hermann's Physician Network.
